Marketing Copywriting.

Marketing is the name given to any external corporate sales or promotional messages that appear in the form of:
• Advertising
• Printed collateral such as brochures, sell sheets and direct mail
• Newsletters
• Broadcast commercials on TV, radio or cable
• New media such as websites, touch screen displays or interactive kiosks

These messages are usually very direct and contain more of a “hard sell” approach than publicity content. Marketing materials and space are paid for by the company placing them, which means they're more expensive than publicity messages. However, because the messages are paid for, the advertiser has a great deal more control over how the message will be delivered. The advertiser can dictate exactly what the message will be and how it will be said, unlike publicity, where a press release may trigger a feature article or a mention, but the content is solely controlled by publication or broadcast editors.

One exception to this rule is newsletters, which straddle the line between editorial and advertising content. Newsletters, to be read, must contain useful editorial information for readers, but also are produced under the sole direction of an editor whose job is to promote company products and services. For this reason, we include newsletters under the umbrella of marketing writing.
