Nockamixon Notes
Holiday Season Begins With A Bang in Nockamixon
12/4/03 Column
by Mary Shafer

The holiday bustle has begun, and it’s had a bit of a scary start here in Nockamixon. As I write this, emergency crews are clearing a huge traffic snarl caused by an accident at Routes 611 and 412 (and Nockamixon Crossing isn’t even there yet!). My guess is people have forgotten since last year how to drive on early morning roads too cold to melt night’s light snow. Though it imparts a seasonal beauty to our lovely area, the snow also makes the roads slick, so folks, be careful out there!

Another somewhat frightening event was the electrical blackout we experienced (at least here in Ferndale) during last month’s big wind storm. A huge tree fell on our neighbor’s house across the Gallows Run from the Ferndale Inn, taking out the chimney and several key electrical lines. It plunged our entire corner and the surrounding area into darkness, just as the sun was going down and school was letting out. However, our trusty emergency volunteers were soon at work directing traffic here at the light. Thanks to those who stood out in the cold until around midnight, when the traffic crews came to put up stop signs. And thanks to all our neighbors who showed patience and good driving judgment during the initial confusion. This is the kind of thing that shows the real ties that bind a small community. Karen at the Ferndale Inn was nervous because she had a big party scheduled for Saturday evening, but GPU crews showed up bright and early and worked all day. They had the lights glowing in the windows by the time for her guests to arrive, so everything had a happy ending.

Our thoughts and blessings go out to Ed “Lefty” Jesiolowski, longtime caretaker of Colman Balogh Memorial Veterans Park. He was suddenly stricken with blood on his brain about two weeks ago. He was operated on at St. Luke’s Hospital, and is now recovering at Good Shepherd Rehab in Bethlehem. We wish him a full and speedy recovery, and enough visitors to let him know we’re all thinking of him. His pals at American Legion Post 399 are keeping a regular vigil.

Speaking of Post 399, they’ll be bearing the colors along with their fellow post in Frenchtown, New Jersey this Sunday for their annual flag-burning ceremony on Pearl Harbor Day. Don’t be alarmed: This isn’t a protest, but a regular part of the Legion’s duties in properly disposing of worn and tattered flags. Ed Litschauer says Nockamixon residents should give any of their old flags to Legion members, who will dispose of them in our ceremony on Flag Day.

At the end of my first full year writing this column, I thank you all for your interest, your submissions and the many kind words I have received. Remember, this column is about you — please continue letting me know of the anniversaries, birthdays and other family and community celebrations you’d like me to share with our friends and neighbors. Wishing everyone happy and safe holidays, with particular thoughts of our neighbors who face this season without their loved ones who serve us all overseas. Remember them when you count your blessings this year.
