Nockamixon Notes |

With the sun rounding over to that steeper autumn angle that makes for long, golden afternoons, it’s a season of comings and goings here in Nockamixon. Ernesto blew through with a lot of rain, but not enough to make the river flood again, so we dodged a bullet there. I can almost feel the relief of our neighbors along the river. We reluctantly say goodbye to longtime neighbor Judy’s Friendly Garden Restaurant, which will be sold at auction on September 26 for back taxes. The popular community meeting place struggled after Judy, the original owner, was lost in a car accident a few years ago. Business is never easy, and starting back up after such an unexpected loss is sometimes more than a small enterprise can manage. So we bid farewell to the Judy’s crew, with thanks for all the years of good service. We truly will miss our local Friendly Garden. On a happier note, we welcome Donna Davis and her new Country Town general store and gift shop, in the beautiful brick building near the Revere curve. Some of you will recognize Donna from the Dollar Store she operated at the new Revere Mall until a few months ago. She says this shop is closer to her passion, and it shows: a small convenience store in the back leads into two floors of well-merchandised items for hearth and home. The atmosphere is reminiscent of another store farther south on 611, and those of us who like this type of product will welcome not having to make the longer trip! And it’s so fun to have a little porch with a few tables and chairs, where friends can shoot the breeze and small business owners can meet clients in a homey, casual atmosphere. Say hi to Buffy the Country Cat while you’re there she’s very friendly!

We’re all glad that the Rt. 611 road construction is moving at a fairly rapid pace, and will be even gladder to see it completed! Just keep in mind that the annoying delays will leave us with a smoother, safer ride for years to come. Returning from some construction work of his own is Tom “The Tire King” Lyons, and we wish him a speedy recovery. We’re sure he’ll be back behind his shop counter in no time. Condolences go out to Revere’s Gary Westerfer, who’s getting through the recent loss of his mom. Added to the earlier loss this year of two brothers, Gary’s having kind of a rough year, so send gentle thoughts his way, neighbors. Something else had a rough time, too, during the recent wind and rain from Ernesto: The great blue heron that usually stands so majestically in the Gallows Run across our street apparently couldn’t negotiate the winds and got blown into the power lines there. We discovered him hanging from the lines on Sunday, and he’s a sad sight. Let’s look forward to happier things, though, such as the upcoming Nockamixon Community Day. From noon till 5 PM on Saturday, September 23, neighbors will gather for the third annual event. Live music, hayrides and other family activities will blend with a large open air marketplace made up of local vendors displaying their wares for sale. I look forward to seeing you all there! And don’t forget to support the Palisades Community Foundation’s 4th annual Silent Auction. That happens the next day from 4-7PM at the Gardenville Hotel, corner of Rt. 413 and Point Pleasant Pike in Gardenville. Tickets are only $25 per person, and include hors d’oevres and a cash bar. Attendees can enter a 50/50 drawing for five incremental cash prizes. Help this hardworking group continue their important work enhancing our community by bidding on some fantastic prizes!
