Nockamixon Notes
Summer At Long Last, A-Swirl With June Events
6/5/03 Column
by Mary Shafer

The primary elections have come and gone, school will be out in the Palisades district on June 18th, and everything’s bursting with green: Summer must be upon us here in Nockamixon! And with it comes lots of news and upcoming events.

Township auditor Nancy Janyszewski has been helping organize a great charitable event to benefit local military veterans and community projects. This Saturday (June 7th) at 10 AM, join lots of your friends and neighbors at VetRock 2003, a musical concert and art festival being held at Maennerchor Field on Cold Spring Creamery Road, just off Rt. 313 in Doylestown. Tickets are $28 in advance, available from the VetRock website at www.vetrock.net or tickets.com, and $32 at the gate. Main stage performers include Janis Joplin’s band, Big Brother & the Holding Company and other favorites.

June 11th brings a whole day of huge shopping discounts at local Bon Ton stores for those who hold Care to Share coupons, which cost $5 and provide 12 different discounts on store merchandise. These discounts are generous and not narrowly limited, so if you're in the market for serious savings, contact your local Jolly Roger Society member to purchase coupons for yourself or as a terrific gift.

If open air shopping is more your style, the Riegelsville Public Library is sponsoring a Flea Market to raise funds for the library from 9 AM to 3 PM on June 14th. Spaces are still open at $10 each. Call 610749-0790 for more information.

The Palisades Alumni Association will hold its 51st Annual Banquet on Saturday, June 21st at the Springtown Fire Hall on Rt. 212 in Springtown. Beverages will be served at 5:30 PM and dinner will follow at 6. The Association is a union of Springfield, Nockamixon and Palisades alumni of the high school’s first graduating class, and they will be awarding two current graduates each a $1,000 scholarship, as well as two $250 awards for outstanding athletes. Contact Norma Fox for more information at 610-847-5445.

Martin Focazio reminds everyone who has ever wanted to volunteer for fire and rescue service but couldn’t afford the training that Pennsylvania law mandates state-funded training for such volunteers. Our area is served through courses from Bucks County Community College, taught in Doylestown. For more information, contact William York, Fire Marshall at 215-340-8417 or visit the website at bucks.edu/publicsafety.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer!
