Community Action Marks Pre-Summer Activities

It was great to hear lots of people are pitching in to make our community a better place to live! Volunteers participated in Clean Up Pennsylvania Day on Saturday, April 24, with an Earth Day cleanup of the roads and streams of Nockamixon Township. Appliances, tires and batteries were recycled at the Township Building, while bands of citizens roamed the township with trash bags in hand. The Township hosted a lunch for the volunteers, which was highlighted by lemon chicken provided by Chef Tell.

The Gallows Run Watershed Association did their part, conducting a stream cleanup along the bottom of Ealer Hill. An assembled scaffold, an iron sewing machine, two sleeping bags, tires and hubcaps were among the debris collected for pick-up by the township. The GRWA made great use of their opportunity with manpower on the ground, also monitoring the Gallows Run stream for water quality and conducting an invertebrate count in collaboration with the PA Water Snapshot effort. GRWA president Todd Stone says all indicators showed a healthy diversity of life in the stream.

Thanks to everyone who participated in all these earth-friendly activities!

The American Grill in Kintnersville is undergoing major renovations. The eatery at the intersection of Routes 611 and 32 has added a new roof, new bathrooms and is receiving extensive work on the interior. I understand they’re planning on opening around May 30th. Everyone in the area is excited about the new restaurant, and we wish them the best of luck in reviving the once-thriving business.

Anne Lyons reports that her granddaughter Victoria’s fourth grade art class at Durham-Nox Elementary School put on an exhibition of their work at the school on Thursday evening, April 29. Art teacher Mrs. Fredericks introduced the students to Andinkra symbols, derived from the visual expression of native African spirituality by the Ashanti people of Ghana and the Ivory Coast. The students created their own designs using string, glue, cardboard, paint and oil pastels. Congratulations to Mrs. F. for broadening her students’ horizons, and to the children for their hard work in mounting the fine show!

Congratulations also to Benj Janyszewski of Revere, who will be playing bass with New Hope-based Toni Brown Band at the big Gerry Garcia Birthday Bash August 6 & 7. The celebration of the late frontman for legendary rock band The Grateful Dead will be held in West Virginia. We’re proud to be sending a local ax-man to represent our area in what is sure to be one heck of a party!

We’re gearing up for our own party later this year. Erin Miller of Ferndale has been named to collect contact information for individuals and groups interested in participating as exhibitors and/or vendors at Nockamixon Community Day, scheduled for Saturday, September 25. The event is meant to bring our community together for a day of fun and neighborly activities. The township is requesting that anyone with appropriate information to share, crafts, food or other goods to sell, or displays to exhibit contact Erin at 610-847-8889. The Board of Supervisors and the Event Committee will be making their decisions about who will be participating by the end of May, according to Henry Gawronski.
