Its been the usual hustle and bustle for the holidays here in Nockamixon. Anyone driving south of the Ferndale traffic light on Rt. 611 was treated to an especially beautiful holiday light show by several of our more festive neighbors. Thanks for your effort! The New Year opens with the reorganization meeting of the Township Board or Supervisors on Monday, January 5th at 7:00 PM. Folks, take this opportunity to get a firsthand look at just how the new Board intends to structure our local government. Your friends and neighbors have worked very hard over the past several years in volunteer positions to better our community through the Land Resource Committee, Environmental Advisory Committee and Emergency Management Team. Make sure their important work continues and doesnt fall prey to political whims and cronyism. Theyre working for you. The Nockamixon Historical Society will not be holding their regular January meeting due to the way the New Year holiday falls this year. The next regular members meeting will be February 5th at 7:00 PM. We have lots of new members, and welcome as many more as care to join us in our efforts to preserve and promote local history. In that vein, longtime resident Mary Shively will be speaking Sunday, January 18th at 2:00 PM at the Township Building, about her experiences in our township since 1936. Call 610-847-2798 for more information.

Kintnersville resident Ed Lefty Jesiolowski remains in Blough Nursing Home in Bethlehem, recovering from emergency surgery. Fellow American Legion member Ed Litschauer reports that Lefty is sitting up by himself, and can now walk with help. He is undergoing rehabilitative therapy, and Ed reports he is alert and talkative. Our thoughts are with him, with hopes for a full and speedy recovery. The Legion has no regular January meeting, but Ed says he will call a meeting on the third Sunday afternoon in January to discuss Post 399s participation in the February 3rd commemoration ceremony at the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in Philadelphia. It will mark the 61st anniversary of the torpedo sinking of the USS Dorchester in the North Atlantic during WWII. The ship sank in 27 minutes, while the four chaplains aboard gave away their life vests to others and ministered to those frightened and wounded. They went down with the ship, arm-in-arm, in prayer. Their courage and sacrifice is recognized each year on Congressionally proclaimed Four Chaplains Day, Tom Macfarlan, township Emergency Management Director, urges your attendance at the upcoming meeting on Wednesday, Jan 14th at 7:00 PM. The team will be discussing the CAN telephone emergency alert system. It was recently tested and found to be mostly reliable, but needing some tweaking so that no township resident falls through the cracks in an emergency. Recent Federal heightening of the terrorism alert status makes correct operation of this system even more important. Call the Township at 610-847-8476 for more information.
