Nockamixon Historical Society Launches New Member Drive
4/17/03 issue
By Mary Shafer

Many Palisades area residents have for years enjoyed the free Summer Outdoor Concert program hosted by the Nockamixon Historical Society (NHS). They were begun in 1994 as a revival effort, after Society president Christine de Socarras’ research revealed such concerts were a popular Township pastime during the 1800s. This summer will be the tenth year the popular family entertainment will be offered on the high school grounds, and along with this celebration comes a renewed effort on the part of the NHS to recruit new members and to build interest in the historical nature of Nockamixon Township.

The mission statement of NHS is “to collect, preserve, research and interpret objects, properties, historical and documentary records or materials and oral traditions which illustrate the civil, cultural, political and religious history of the township, as well as the promotion of the study of that history; to maintain an interest of noted community historical events, especially those related to the Society’s involvement; and to encourage and work with the township and local organizations to promote civic projects.”

Christine wants to make sure everyone is aware that the Society is not a Commission, so they aren’t interested in telling people what they can or can’t do with their properties. They are, however, interested in helping those who wish to preserve family heirlooms or other historical items, which could include property, in a historically accurate way.

Other projects the NHS has previously been involved with include:

  • Publication of the Nockamixon 250th Anniversary Book, which traces the history of each village in the Township, and includes many vintage photos. This was NHS’ first project and has proven very successful. Books are still available for $5.00 from the Township at 610-847-5058.
  • 250th Anniversary Commemoration of Bucks County Pottery
  • Vintage photo and artifact collection
  • Historical Building Pictorial Survey
  • Newspaper in Education sponsorship
  • Various events including Fourth of July celebrations, old-fashioned cider-making demonstrations, informative talks by residents, and historic day trips

To learn more about the NHS and its other activities: attend a monthly meeting at the Township building on Lake Warren Road in Ferndale, held at 7:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month; call Christine at 610-847-2798; or write to NHS, PO Box 184, Revere, PA 18953. Annual dues are $10 Individual and $15 Family.
